YEREVAN, November 19. /ARKA/. Renewable energy could become an alternative to imports of  natural gas for Armenia, Abgar Budaghyan, an advisor for the USAID Energy Future regional program, said on Tuesday.

Armenia's energy system depends largely on imported energy resources and the only internal resource is renewable energy, he added.

"The more active Armenia is in placing emphasis on the development of renewable energy, the more its dependence on energy imports will decrease,' he said adding that Armenia cannot influence energy resources' prices which are formed depending on the situation on the international market.

On December 31, 2018 Russia's Gazprom raised the price of natural gas it ships to Armenia across Georgia from $150 per one thousand cubic meters to $165. In 2018, Gazprom supplied 1.94 billion cubic meters of gas to Armenia.

Although the Russian natural gas is delivered to Armenia by Gazprom at a $165 per one thousand cubic meters, Gazprom’s Armenian subsidiary - Gazprom Armenia - sells it to the bulk of Armenian households at almost $300.

Gazprom Armenia also deals with the storage, distribution and sale of gas. The Russian-Armenian contract expires on December 31, 2019. The Armenian government said it was negotiating a new five-year contract with Russian Gazprom.-0-
