23.12.2011, 14:35
Armenian energy and natural resources minister Armen Movsisyan said yesterday reserves of coal found in Nagorno-Karabakh will be used to resume the operation of the old thermal power plant in Yerevan which stands now idle.

YEREVAN, December 23. /ARKA/. Armenian energy and natural resources minister Armen Movsisyan said yesterday reserves of coal found in Nagorno-Karabakh will be used to resume the operation of the old thermal power plant in Yerevan which stands now idle. He said this plan is part of a broader program to use local natural resources for production of energy. According to the minister, ‘this is a very serious program that will significantly increase the energy security of Armenia.’

He said though coal transportation cost is high, it can create a substantial economic effect in the system, in particular, to mitigate the impact of energy resources on electricity prices.’

The minister said a certain amount of work has been done in this direction saying also the hope is that the idle power plant will generate first electricity at the end of the first quarter of 2012. He explained that two units of now idle facility with a capacity of 50 MW each will work on coal. About 2000 tons of coal is produced daily in Nagorno-Karabakh. -0-
