Armenian ministry can not ban import of Turkish tomatoes

In response to Armenian media reports that large consignments of imported Turkish tomatoes are sold in Armenia as locally produced, harming local farmers, the ministry of agriculture said it can not ban imports of Turkish tomatoes if there is no breach of law.

YEREVAN, December 1. /ARKA/. In response to Armenian media reports that large consignments of imported Turkish tomatoes are sold in Armenia as locally produced, harming local farmers, the ministry of agriculture said it can not ban imports of Turkish tomatoes if there is no breach of law.
Speaking to reporters today agriculture minister Ignatiy Arakelyan said if relating government agencies reveal violations in the imports of tomatoes from Turkey, the issue will be resolved in the framework of the law. He added that he had discussed this issue with the head of the State Revenue Committee Vardan Harutyunyan.
According to him, Vardan Harutyunyan ordered his subordinates to find out whether there are cases of smuggling. ‘If there is evidence, please convey it to the representatives of state bodies who are ready to consider them," - Arakelyan said.
The minister said this problem can be resolved "radically" by increasing the competitiveness of local products. -0-
