Russian Aeroflot nearly doubles prices of air tickets
YEREVAN, July 4. /ARKA/.  Head of an Armenian consumer watchdog has accused today Russia’s largest airline Aeroflot of inflating prices of tickets from Armenia to Russia in an attempt to capitalize on a massive mudslide that has locked the sole functioning crossing on the Russian-Georgian border, used heavily by Armenian trucks and passenger cars.

Speaking to a news conference, Karen Chilingaryan, head of Consumer Advisory Center, lashed out at Aeroflot for nearly doubling the prices of tickets.  ‘This is a blatant violation of the rights of consumers, " said Chilingaryan.

He said his organization is monitoring the situation and is going to ask the Ministry of Transport and Communication of Armenia to make a corresponding inquiry.

Earlier, an Armenian MP Edmond Marukyan asked the State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition to conduct an investigation into the ungrounded rise of ticket prices.

Heavy rains washed away a nearly one-kilometer-long Georgian section of the road near the Upper Lars crossing heavily used for cargo shipments between Armenia and Russia. Hundreds of Armenian and other trucks were left stranded on either side of the mountainous checkpoint.

According to Chilingaryan, the border crossing will be closed for another couple of weeks.

"Upper Lars checkpoint is "a road of life," for Armenia. This calamity affects all, especially companies engaged in exports of fresh fruits and vegetables ", said Chilingaryan.

According to him, transportation by ferry can not resolve the problem, because it increases the cost of transportation and secondly, ferries can take only limited number of containers.

"Armenian farmers are already complaining that they have to sell their products more cheaply than planned, because they can not be exported", said Chilingaryan. -0-
