YEREVAN, September 23, /ARKA/. The French telecommunications operator Orange plans to invest 150 million euros in Armenia in 2009-2011 to advance Armenia’s third mobile phone network, Olaf Swantee, Orange vice president for Europe, told journalists in Paris in response to a question from ARKA.

According to him, the bulk of investments will be directed to building the technical and distributing network, development of special products and services. “We want to invest in Armenia because we want to be the best provider,’ he said.

Until now the company has invested about 70% of the $80 million earmarked for this year.

Bruno Duthoit, the chief executive of the newly registered Orange-Armenia brand, said during a recent news conference that Orange-Armenia will try to woo Armenians with “a new approach, a new perception, a new image and certain new services.”

Orange won last October an international tender for the right to launch and operate the third Armenian wireless network. It paid 50 million euros ($72 million) for the 15 year license, outbidding two other European telecom firms short-listed in the government-administered contest.

The other two networks are owned by the subsidiaries of Russia’s two largest wireless operators, MTS and Beeline. -0-
