Premier: Yerevan is optimistic in the issues of continuation of dialogue with corporation “Millennium Challenges”

Armenian side has optimistic approach for the proposal of continuation of dialogue with corporation “Millennium Challenges”, said Armenian Premier Tigran Sargsyan.
YEREVAN, May 12. /ARKA/. Armenian side has optimistic approach for the proposal of continuation of dialogue with corporation “Millennium Challenges”, said Armenian Premier Tigran Sargsyan.
During the visit (at the beginning of May) in Armenia, the Head of Corporation Daniel W. Johannes gave positive assessments to the implementation of this program in the country.
“It was a very important visit as well as from political point of view, as the program entered the final phase and we should end the works in the amount of $177 million by the end of the year. We spoke about further cooperation, for which we have certain criteria and agreements”, said Sargsyan.
Earlier Mari Jovanovich said that Armenia can not apply to the American corporation “Millennium Challenges” for a new program due to some irrelevant indicators of the country to the requirements of the fund.
In 2006, corporation “Millennium Challenges” and the Government of Armenia signed agreement targeted at the reduction of rural poverty via stable economic growth in agricultural sphere.
Upon the end of the program in September 2011, investments in the frames of grant of corporation targeted at the implementation of the program “Millennium Challenges –Armenia” will be 180 million US dollars.
In the result of rehabilitation of the main sections of highway water channels, modernization of key pomp-stations, establishment of new gravity systems and reconstruction of certain sections of drainage system of Ararat Valley, beneficiaries of the program will be over 420 thousand rural inhabitants in about 350 communities of Armenia.
In the frames of the program “Millennium Challenges –Armenia”, about 45 thousand farmers undergo training courses.
Technical assistance is provided to water supply companies. For the implementation of the goals of the program, credits are provided to the farmers and small enterprises of agri-business in the total amount of 8.5 million dollars.
