The Russian-owned South Caucasus Railways company, operating Armenia’s railroads, said today it transported 2.036 million metric tons of cargo in the first eight months of 2011, by 4.3% more than in the same time span in 2010. According to a company’s press release, sent to ARKA, the actual volume of railroading was 7.6% higher than projected for January-August.
The company said it transported outside the country 274,800 metric tons of goods, a 27% year-щn-year rise and brought to the country 836,700 tons of cargo, by 11.9% less form a year earlier. The volume of domestically transported cargo grew by 17.6% to 924,600 tons.
Earlier the company’s CEO, Shevket Shaydulin, said last year it managed to fulfil its tasks securing growth in all basic indicators, including шт the volume of freight traffic. The trend continues this year. He said it was the best illustration of a flexible tariff policy, resulting in кувгсштп transportation costs of companies using the railways.
"Two years ago the share of rail freight in the total freight traffic was 22%. Now it has risen to 35%. We work to improve our logistics, develop and diversify our business. New technology being introduced will ensure higher quality services, bigger freight volumes and greater competitiveness," Shaydulin said.
Armenian Railways was handed over to the South Caucasus Railways on February 13, 2008 for 30-year concession management with a right to prolong the management term for other 10 years. -0-
