Armenia intends to diversify its gas supply sources by purchasing gas simultaneously from Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Turkey, stated RA Security Council Secretary Alen Simonyan.
YEREVAN, September 16. /ARKA/. Armenia intends to diversify its gas supply sources by purchasing gas simultaneously from Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Turkey, stated RA Security Council Secretary Alen Simonyan.
"In all possible economic and security matters, Armenia has chosen and will continue to choose alternatives and balance. This tactic will continue," Simonyan noted at a briefing on Wednesday, responding to a question about Moscow's statements regarding a possible gas price increase for Armenia and possible alternatives to Russian gas.
According to him, alternative gas supplies to Armenia can come from all possible countries.
"Who said we are going to replace dependence on one country with dependence on another? We are preparing to purchase gas from all possible sources—simultaneously from Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey. "I don't think Russian gas is cheap. And who said gas prices are measured only in dollars? You see, gas is used as a political currency," Simonyan said.
On Gas Supplies
Moscow has repeatedly warned Yerevan about the possible economic consequences of adopting EU standards. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that, in such a case, Russia would have to curtail its economic integration with Armenia. He also stated that, according to preliminary expert estimates, rising energy prices in the event of Armenia's withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) could lead to a loss of at least 14% of Armenia's GDP.
Furthermore, Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev sent a letter to Armenia warning of the possibility of suspending or denouncement of the December 2, 2013, agreement on the supply of gas, petroleum products, and rough diamonds if Armenia continues its EU accession process. Tsivilev later explained that if Armenia transitions from the EAEU to the EU, Russia will not be able to supply it with gas at the current price.
At the end of August of this year, RA Finance Minister Vahe Hovhannisyan stated that the government had calculated the possible consequences of a price increase for Russian gas and intended to incorporate these calculations into its risk assessment system.

At the end of 2021, Armenia and Russia reached an agreement to maintain the price at $165 for ten years; the corresponding intergovernmental protocol was signed in 2022.
