President: public confidence in courts must be enhanced in Armenia

Public confidence in judicial system must be enhanced in Armenia, Armenian President Serge Sargsyan said Thursday at the ceremony of celebrating 10th anniversary of Armenian Court of Cassation.
YEREVAN, July 10. /ARKA/. Public confidence in judicial system must be enhanced in Armenia, Armenian President Serge Sargsyan said Thursday at the ceremony of celebrating 10th anniversary of Armenian Court of Cassation.

He said that the justice system has plenty to do to enhance public confidence.

The president thinks that judges must become independent.

“I will take whatever necessary to rid them of financial dependence and make them independent on influential people. At the same time, I’ll keep a vigilant watch on them to prevent abusing this independence and shielding themselves from the law”, the president said.

He said that public discontent is mainly fueled by injustice, and people’s demand is to ensure a genuine justice in courts.

Summarizing the results of the Cassation Court’s decade-long activity, Sargsyan said that the court has done a huge job of forming courts and ensuring their activities.

He said that the Court of Cassation bears the responsibility for forming new legal traditions.
“We have reached substantial achievements in state and legal thoughts in Armenia, but never had own courts. Foreigners rendered justice in the country long centuries. That justice could be bought”, the president said.

He said that a new system has already been created. This system must give justice to people.

Sargsyan said that the Court of Cassation started playing a special role in three-grade judicial system after the 2005 reforms, when it was separated from Constitutional Court.

Sargsyan put a special emphasis on adjusting Armenian justice system to European standards. The president urged Armenian judges to improve their skills constantly.

Cassation Court of Armenia was established on June 10, 1998.

The court consists of two chambers – criminal and civil and administrative. The chairman of the count is Hovhannes Manukyan.-0-
