New Yerevan mayor assumes office

Karen Karapetian, the newly installed mayor of Armenian capital Yerevan, was sworn in today in a special ceremony attended also by president Serzh Sargsyan.
YEREVAN, December 20, /ARKA/. Karen Karapetian, the newly installed mayor of Armenian capital Yerevan, was sworn in today in a special ceremony attended also by president Serzh Sargsyan.
Karen Karapetian, who had served as chief executive officer of ArmRosGazprom (ARG) a joint Armenian-Russian venture, handling Russian natural gas supplies to Armenia, since 2001, was nominated for the post by the Republican Party of Armenia to succeed Gagik Beglarian, who was made step down earlier this month after being involved in a high-profile scandal with the presidential administration.
Karen Karapetian was elected December 17 by the Council of Elders, an elected body of representatives in Yerevan, receiving the support of 50 assembly members, with only one voting against.
Taking the office he swore to observe the country’s Constitution and its laws, the resolutions of the City Council and fulfill his duties for the sake of the city and its residents. The new mayor is expected to present soon a new plan of actions to develop the city. -0-
