Armenia welcomes success of referendum for self determination by South Sudan

Armenia’s foreign minister Edward Nalbandian has welcomed today the success of the referendum for self determination by South Sudan, saying its results confirm once again the right of a people to self determination.
YEREVAN, January 31. / ARKA /. Armenia’s foreign minister Edward Nalbandian has welcomed today the success of the referendum for self determination by South Sudan, saying its results confirm once again the right of a people to self determination.
A press release of the ministry quoted him as saying that the preliminary results will hardly differ form the final outcome confirming once again that the right to self determination is the integral right of any people.
He said the choice of the population of Southern Sudan is the freshest example of the victorious campaign for the right to self-determination ever since the creation of the UN being the right way for solution of issues, welcomed by the international community.
“We hope that by choosing this way of determining its own future, Southern Sudan will succeed in establishing and developing an independent statehood,’ he was quoted as saying.
On Sunday, the South Sudan Referendum Commission (SSRC) announced that 98.83 percent of the voters have voted in favor of separation and 1.17 percent voted for unity. The final results of the referendum are expected to be announced on February 7, if there were no appeals. Otherwise, the result will come out on February 14. -0-
