YEREVAN, February 16. /ARKA/. Recognition of independence of Artsakh (Armenian name Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) is advantageous for Iran, Armenian expert Mher Baghdasaryan says.
“In Karabakh issue Iran is the only country for which status quo is advantageous. Current situation in Artsakh and its independence comes from the interests of Iran as recognition of Artsakh independence means full diplomatic defeat of Azerbaijan”, said Baghdasaryan in the press-conference on Wednesday.
Current authorities of Azerbaijan came to power during the huge wave of Karabakh conflict and in its result Iran could obtain large opportunities of developing Islamic factor in Azerbaijan.
Pro-Armenian solution of Karabakh issue is important for Iran from political and economic point of view as Iran will get opportunity to enter secondary markets.
Karabakh conflict started in 1988 after announcement of coming out of Nagorno- Karabakh from Azerbaijan. On December 10, 1991 referendum took place in Nagorno- Karabakh where 99.89% agreed to become independent from Azerbaijan. On May 12, 1994 military actions were terminated in the zone. About 25-30 thousand people died from each side and about 1 million had to leave their houses.
Cease-fire continues till now. From 1992 till present negotiations are conducted on peaceful regulation of the conflict in the frames of Minsk Group of OSCE, co-chairmen of which are USA, Russia and France. —0--
