Samvel Nikoyan, a deputy parliament speaker from the ruling Republican Party was elected today as chairman of the National Assembly, Novosti-Armenia news agency reported.
YEREVAN, December 6, /ARKA/. Samvel Nikoyan, a deputy parliament speaker from the ruling Republican Party was elected today as chairman of the National Assembly, Novosti-Armenia news agency reported.
His opponent was Larisa Alaverdian from the opposition Zharangutyun (Heritage) party. Nikoyan was endorsed by 102 votes. Ms. Alaverdian received four votes
Previous parliament chairman, Hovik Abrahamian, resigned November 14 ‘to head the Republican Party’s central election office ahead of next May parliamentary elections.’
The Republican Party controls 63 seats in the 131-member National Assembly. The prime minister and many of Cabinet members are also from this party. -0-
