YEREVAN, May 9. /ARKA/. Armen Sarkissian, Armenian president, told journalists on Wednesday that the new government will prove to be successful.

On April 23, Serzh Sargsyan, who was appointed by the Armenian parliament as prime minister amid widespread disaffection with him, resigned under the pressure of mass protests against his premiership. On the same day, Armen Sarkissian, Armenian president accepted the government’s resignation.

On May 8, the National Assembly elected Nikol Pashinyan as prime minister by a majority of votes - 59 MPs voted for him and 42 voted against him. On the same day, Armen Sarkissian issued a decree appointing Nikol Pashinyan as Armenian prime minister.

“I find Nikol Pashinyan a talented person, and we have mutual respect for each other, and I will make my contribution to the new government’s success,” he said. “Otherwise, it will mean that the movement has been senseless as well as people’s hope for the future. I hope that tomorrow will be better and the government will be successful.”

Sarkissian also expressed hope that the new prime minister will form a new government in the next few days and many problems, including economic and corruption problems, will be solved.

“As for assessment of separate persons, the best judge is God, people and time – time will give legal or other assessments,” he said. “I am not a judge, I am just a president, who should contribute to the introduction of the rule of law and respect for the Constitution.”

He also said that he is proud of today’s Armenia, since people have managed to do what not a single country has managed to do in recent decades – to stage a velvet revolution, which has become an Armenian-style revolution, since it has taken place without clashes and with flowers, smiles, festivities and balloons.

Looking through the world media resources, Sarkissian noticed that Armenians’ image has become increased tenfold within one month.

“It is very important now to use the positive energy Armenian people, also Armenians worldwide, have displayed for building a better country,” he said.

The president hopes that if this positive energy remains, and consistent positive steps are taken, then many Armenians living abroad will return to their homeland. He said such sentiments are already seen. -0---
