Armenia's government program will include continued membership in Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), says MP
YEREVAN, August 11. /ARКА/. Armenia's continued membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) will be reflected in the new government's program, stated Sargis Khandanyan, a member of parliament from the ruling Civil Contract faction.
According to him, Armenia's status in the EAEU and continued membership in the union were enshrined in the Civil Contract party's election program.
"As you saw, Armenia participated in the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council and presented its position. Furthermore, Armenia actively participates in processes in all EAEU formats and contributes both politically and financially," Khandanyan said at a parliamentary press briefing. He noted that Armenia will continue to work with its EAEU partners in this area.
Commenting on the idea of holding a referendum in Armenia to choose between the EAEU and the EU, Khandanyan called it an "artificial agenda." "There can't be a referendum on an issue that simply doesn't exist," the MP stated.
In the spring of 2025, Armenia adopted a law beginning the country's accession process to the European Union. However, the adoption of the law does not in itself mean that Armenia has officially applied for EU membership.
The Armenian authorities have declared their intention to continue their rapprochement with the European Union while simultaneously maintaining membership in the EAEU for as long as it remains possible to combine these two approaches.
On May 28, 2026, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Armenia does not intend to leave the EAEU and expects to fully utilize the union's potential to protect its economic interests.
Russia has imposed sweeping trade restrictions and import bans on Armenian agricultural and food products, officially citing sanitary and phytosanitary violations. These measures are widely viewed as political retaliation against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's government for pursuing closer integration with the European Union. -0-
