YEREVAN, August 22. /ARKA/. Armenia’s police have asked the Russian Embassy in Armenia to provide them with the video of an incident that reportedly occurred last Saturday near the Russian diplomatic mission in the Armenian capital. The police said today they did not receive the video yet.
The police also disagreed with a number of media stories highlighting contradictions contained in two official statements disseminated by the police and the embassy about the incident.
"In fact, these two statements do not contradict each other. The police said that "several people tried to get into the specially protected area of the Russian embassy and entered the fray with National Security Service officers refusing to obey their legitimate demands," while the embassy’s statement said " its employees have no relation to an Aug. 17 incident near the embassy involving security officers and several Armenian citizens.’
In comments on another assertion contained in the embassy’s statement that "media reports that some persons tried to illegally enter or throw some objects into the embassy’s territory do not correspond to reality," the police said its statement said nothing about attempts to throw anything into the embassy’s territory.
Armenian police said Monday they were investigating an attempt to enter the territory of the Russian Embassy in Yerevan. They said late on Saturday evening several people attempted g to get into the specially protected area of the Russian Embassy, entering into a fray with the security guards and did not obey their lawful demands.
About an hour later civil activists Melik Daveyan, Karen Arakelyan and Gor Harutyunyan were taken to police on suspicion of committing these illegal acts. They were participating in multi-day protest in front of the Yerevan City Hall, located near the Russian embassy, demanding the resignation of a number of municipality officials responsible for public transportation of the capital. All three refused to give explanations. -0-
