CSTO to elect new secretary general December 6 in St. Petersburg

A successor to Yuri Khachaturov, who served until lately as secretary general of the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is most likely to be chosen on December 6, when the leaders of the CSTO member countries meet in Russian St. Petersburg.
YEREVAN, November 8. /ARKA/. A successor to Yuri Khachaturov, who served until lately as secretary general of the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is most likely to be chosen on December 6, when the leaders of the CSTO member countries meet in Russian St. Petersburg.
Until then Khachaturov’s deputy Valery Semerikov will remain in charge of the organization, Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman to Russian president, told journalists, according to RIA Novosti.
The leaders of the countries were supposed to elect a new secretary general at their meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan, today
“The heads of state and government agreed to take the final decision on December 6 in St. Petersburg.,” Peskov told journalists.
Yuri Khachaturov, who was dismissed on October 30, has been charged by Armenian law-enforcement authorities with inciting a coup in Armenia in connection with the March 1, 2008 post-presidential election crackdown on opposition protesters, when eight civilians and two police officers were killed.
Yuri Ushakov, an aide to Russian president, said earlier that three candidates (options) were being considered for this position. He said either the job will be given to Semerikov until May 2020, to a representative of Belarus, which is second alphabetically or to a representative of Armenia. Ushakov said Armenia insists on this option He said it was difficult to predict what decision the leaders would take.
Khachaturov was elected to the post in May 2017. -0-
