Deputy police chief discloses details of attack in Yerevan

Deputy chief of Armenian Police Hunan Poghosyan told reporters that members of an armed group that took control of a police station today morning in Yerevan's Erebuni district, have killed Colonel Arthur Vanoyan, wounding also Colonel Aram Hovhannisyan, Colonel Hrachya Hostegyan and commissioned officer Gagik Mkrtchyan.
YEREVAN, July 17. /ARKA/. Deputy chief of Armenian Police Hunan Poghosyan told reporters that members of an armed group that took control of a police station today morning in Yerevan's Erebuni district, have killed Colonel Arthur Vanoyan, wounding also Colonel Aram Hovhannisyan, Colonel Hrachya Hostegyan and commissioned officer Gagik Mkrtchyan.
Poghosyan also said that the armed group has taken hostage several police officers, including deputy chief of Yerevan police Valery Osipyan.
According to Poghosyan, the negotiators are trying to persuade the armed group to abandon criminal intentions and surrender.
"Otherwise, the police have the powers and means for their neutralization. We are taking all preventive and operational measures, and if our appeals are not heard, we are able to neutralize (them), because there is no other way to treat murderers," he said.
According to Poghosyan, the police still hopes to solve the problem through negotiations.
"Their only demand is the release of Zhirayr Sefilian. They have no other demands,' he said.
Asked whether the police were going to release Sefilian he said "Of course not.' -0-
