YEREVAN, August 2. /ARKA/. Nikol Pashinyan signed a resignation letter addressed to President Vahagn Khachaturyan.
"Today begins the first session of the National Assembly of the 9th convocation, or rather, it has already begun, and in accordance with Article 158 of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, the government submits its resignation to the President of the Republic on the day of the first session of the National Assembly," he said live on air, signing the resignation letter.
Pashinyan added that until a new cabinet is formed, members of the government will continue to perform their duties.
"Article 149 of the Constitution states that, upon the commencement of the term of office of the newly elected National Assembly, the President of the Republic shall immediately appoint the candidate nominated by the parliamentary majority as Prime Minister." "Today, the parliamentary majority will present a candidate for prime minister to the President of the Republic, and, accordingly, the appointment will take place in accordance with Article 148 of the Constitution," the acting prime minister said.
The cabinet's resignation is due to the legally established procedure for forming a new government following the parliamentary elections and the commencement of the new parliament's term.
After the election of the Speaker of the National Assembly, his deputies, and the heads of the standing committees, parliament will consider the prime minister's candidacy nominated by the parliamentary majority party. A new government will then be formed, which will present its program to the deputies.
Pashinyan is the chairman of the board of the Civil Contract party, which received the majority of votes in the parliamentary elections and 64 seats in the new National Assembly.
The government's resignation is procedural in nature and does not automatically terminate the cabinet's duties until a new cabinet is formed.
