YEREVAN, September 2. /ARKA/. U.S. Ambassador to Armenia, John Heffern, said today he expects what he described as ‘interesting political autumn’ in Armenia, Novosti -Armenia News Agency reports.
According to him, the autumn is going to be interesting because of an Eastern Partnership summit this November in Vilnius, where Armenia and several other former Soviet republics are expected to initial association agreements with the European Union.
The U.S. diplomat also added that this autumn Armenian authorities will have to make important decisions regarding civil aviation sector and choose a national air carrier to replace Armavia Airline.
The ambassador’s remarks were made at a meeting of religious leaders brought together in Yerevan by the Council of Europe Inter-Cultural Dialogue.
The ambassador spoke also about stepping up civic activity in Armenia in light of the latest public protests.
“Of course, I am following these developments. Expression of people’s will through peaceful demonstrations prompted by national and international challenges is an important process, and I want to praise the demonstrators and the police for showing due restraint,” he said.
According to Ambassador Heffern, isolated incidents can not be avoided, “but we continue working closely with the police and security forces to implement positive changes in this area,” he said. ---0---
