Armenia proposes 7-hour workday; Providing justifications

YEREVAN, December 23. /ARKA/. A proposal has been made in Armenia to reduce the working day to 7 hours (currently 8 hours), and accordingly reduce the weekly working hours from 40 to 35, while maintaining wages. These changes are proposed in the draft law "On Amendments and Additions to the Labor Code of the Republic of Armenia," which has been posted on the legislative initiative website e-draft.am.

"International experience and various studies show that reducing weekly working hours does not negatively affect the economy. On the contrary, it contributes to increased labor productivity and positively impacts the quality of life, improving the balance between work and personal life," states the justification for the draft law.

It is noted that the World Health Organization has published studies showing that long working hours can lead to cardiovascular diseases and contribute to depression and stress.

"Economic studies suggest that reducing working hours can boost productivity by encouraging employees to work more efficiently. It may also result in the creation of new jobs as part of a general economic trend," the justification adds.
