YEREVAN, June 5. /ARKA/. Babken Tunyan, an Armenian MP from the governing My Step alliance, called today for a rise in the minimum wage. He said he and another lawmaker developed a package of relating legislative changes and sent them to the government for consideration.
He said they propose that the minimum wage be raised to 63,000 drams. Finance Minister Atom Janjughazyan noted in turn he could not talk on the matter without sufficient justification.
"We agree that the proposed rise can change the situation, and we can do it even without sufficient justification. The government had done so in the past, but the move increased the debt burden," said Janjughazyan.
The minimum wage in Armenia today is 55,000 drams. The last time it rose was in 2015. According to the Ministry of Finance, the median gross salary in Armenia in 2018 was 172,000 drams. Public sector median salary was 149,000 drams, down from 186,000 drams in the private sector. ($1 - AMD 479.79). -0-
