Armenia's National Security Service (NSS) has detained a senior army officer, Major General Armen Harutyunyan, a former commander of Missile Troops and Artillery as part of an investigation into a corruption case.

YEREVAN, June 17. /ARKA/. Armenia's National Security Service (NSS) has detained a senior army officer, Major General Armen Harutyunyan, a former commander of Missile Troops and Artillery as part of an investigation into a corruption case.

Armen Harutyunyan, who was head of a military commission tasked to check the compliance of arms supplied to the armed forces is accused of having assisted the head and owner of an arms supplying company, who supplied Czech-made shells for cannons that did not comply with required tactical and technical characteristics.

The cost of the contract was USD 1,083, 000 (equal to 523,089, 000 drams). As a result, the deal caused grave material consequences for the state.

NSS said as part of the criminal case charges were also brought against the director and the owner of the supplying company. The investigation is underway to find out more circumstances of the case, it said. -0-
