Child and maternal mortality rates reduce in Armenia - Ministry of Health

The incidence of mortality among babies under one year old in Armenia in 2022 decreased by 0.2‰ per thousand compared to 2021, and by 0.6% among children under 5 years old, Health Minister Anahit Avanesyan said at a parliamentary session on Wednesday.

YEREVAN, April 19. /ARKA/.  The incidence of mortality among babies under one year old in Armenia in 2022 decreased by 0.2‰ per thousand compared to 2021, and by 0.6% among children under 5 years old, Health Minister Anahit Avanesyan said at a parliamentary session on Wednesday.

She said maternal mortality rate is also decreasing every year.

'In 2021, unfortunately, we had an increase in mortality due to the coronavirus, because the delta strain was quite aggressive against pregnant women, but we were able to return to pre-coronavirus indicators and in 2022 8 deaths were recorded," she said.

Overall, according to official statistics, 22,579 people died in January-October 2022, down 15.9 percent from the same period in 2021 and 12.8 percent from the ten months of 2020.

According to the National Statistical Committee, in the first two months of this year, 31 children under one year of age died in Armenia (10.7% less than in 2022 and 31.1% less than in 2021).

Also, 38 children under the age of 4 died (11.6% less than in 2022 and 24% less than in 2021). There were also 61 stillbirths during this period, 22% more than in the same period in 2022 and 24.7% less than in the same period in 2021. -0-
