YEREVAN, November 20. /ARKA/. Each seventh couple in Armenia suffers infertility, Head of the Armenian Association of Reproductive Medicine Eduard Hambardzumyan told reporters on Tuesday, Novosti-Armenia agency informs.

“Infertility rate in Armenia stands at 16-18%, it is much higher from that in the developed countries, and it really influences the demographic rate of the republic,” he noted.

At the same time, Hambardzumyan noted the infertility rate had slashed significantly in Armenia, “ten years ago it was 28%.”

He noted that the fertility rate is 1.36 children per woman of a reproductive age in Armenia, whereas this index should be 2 children for a simple reproduction of a couple. In order to foster the demographic growth this rate should be 3 children.

According to him, in 50% of the cases the couples can’t have children due to a female’s infertility, in 30-40% of the cases the reason is a male’s infertility, and in 10-20% of the cases- health issues of both partners.

Hambardzumyan’s deputy Karine Popunts said the infertility rate is higher in Armenia’s regions due to the absence of the medical facilities focusing on infertility treatment.

“Association of Reproductive Medicine is working on this issue, and in the near future the medical centers of such nature will be opened in Goris and Gyumri. We have already opened such center in Karabakh,” she said adding that Karabakh has the Center for
Reproductive Medicine.

Also, it was said 70-75% of infertility is treatable in Armenia.

Popunts added nearly 9,000 infertility cases are registered in Armenia annually, and only 20% of couples apply to the artificial insemination that costs 3,500-5,000 U.S. dollars.

However, the troubling thing is that this method can be effective from the first attempt only in 40-50% of the cases.

The experts say high infertility rate in Armenia is due to stresses, high rates of abortion among the Armenian women, social issues and some other factors. -0-
