YEREVAN, May 13. /ARKA. The Armenian police are going to institute criminal proceedings into an incident at Malayan Eye Center in Yerevan, Health Minister Arsen Torosyan said at a press conference.

According to earlier reports, on May 9 six patients of the Malayan Eye Center had nearly gone blind after being injected a drug, which had been acquired two days earlier from Natalie Pharm company.

The patients, who undergone emergency surgery, were assured that their eyesight would recover within a few months. On the same day, the Ministry of Health confirmed the incident.

The minister said the ministry’s inspectorate was notified of the incident and was told to carry out an inspection of the incident. The ministry has also commissioned the Center for Drug and Medical Examination and the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention to look into the incident, according to the minister.

Torosyan said also if it is found that the incident is the result of negligence, it  would entail legal consequences as part of the criminal case on causing damage to health.

Regarding the quality of the drug, which was injected to the affected patients, Torosyan stated that according to yet unconfirmed information, it was properly imported, the series met the registration requirements and the examination did not reveal any problems with the import.

"Presumably, what happened is the result of a violation of the rules of using the drug. However, this is only an assumption. All aspects should be clarified as a result of examinations," the minister said. -- 0--
