Prime minister demands that penalties for pollution be toughened
YEREVAN, October 26. /ARKA/. Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan demanded today that penalties for environmental pollution be toughened. Speaking at a government session he recalled his earlier instructions to toughen the responsibility for the illegal use of natural resources saying relevant proposals are under development.

"However, studies have revealed cases of over -pollution of the environment, in particular,  an absolutely unacceptable ecological situation has emerged  in the Ararat and Masis regions, where irrigation and sewerage waters have been mixed, causing  serious damage to the environment," said Karapetyan.

This in mind, Karapetyan gave instructions to relevant bodies to eliminate and prevent environmental pollution. He instructed the ministers of Emergency Situations, Nature Protection, Territorial Administration and Development, Agriculture, Healthcare, as well as the head of State Water Management Committee to take measures to rule out the dumping of raw sewage and prevent the discharge of waste matter into irrigation water streams by applying more stringent sanctions as prescribed by law.

They were also told to work out within 2 months and submit to the Government Staff legislative proposals on compensation to be paid for damage caused by pollution.

Armenian media reports said earlier this month that farmers in Masis broke sewerage pipes to irrigate their gardens and fields, which not only led to pollution of the environment, but also created a threat of spreading infectious and other diseases through the use of agricultural products grown on these fields. --0--
