YEREVAN, August 13. /ARKA/. The reconstruction of Armenia’s Armavir correctional facility is planned to be completed by late September, Deputy Justice Minister Suren Krmoyan told journalists on Wednesday.
“The penitentiary institution remains the most vulnerable in the justice system,” he said. “The major problem is that the correctional facilities are overcrowded.”
It was reported earlier that Armavir will become a new-type correctional facility for 1,240 inmates and that the present 12 prisons will be replaced with five or six modern correctional facilities.
Armenia’s human rights activists have repeatedly expressed their concerns over overcrowding in prisons and delay in providing medical services to inmates.
Tigran Sargsyan, Armenian former prime minister, once said that AMD 20 billion (about $53.1 million) is needed to reconstruct prisons. --0----
