YEREVAN, 16 August. /ARCH/. Armenia has been named the world's 60th most innovative country in a new survey, released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The "Global Innovation Index 2016" report assesses the situation in 128 countries.

The Global Innovation Index 2016 (GII), released on Monday, is now in its ninth year and is published by Cornell University and UN agency the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

It ranks 128 countries according to their innovation capabilities and results and aims to be a "benchmarking tool for business executives, policy makers and others seeking insight into the state of innovation around the world".

Of former Soviet republics Russia has been ranked 43rd, Ukraine - 56th, Georgia - 64th, Kazakhstan - 75th, Belarus - 79th and Azerbaijan -85th.

Sweden climbed to second place from third in 2015 in a top-five table that included Switzerland at the top, followed by the UK in third place and the US and Finland in the third and fourth spots.

The Global Innovation Index is historically dominated by highly economically developed countries, and 15 of the top 25 are European.  China's entry into the top 25 this year marks the first time a middle-income country has joined the leading group.

Before 2009, research and development (R&D) expenditure grew at an annual pace of about 7 percent, the report said. But by 2014, global R&D spending grew only by 4 percent, as emerging economies, particularly China, slowed their investments and governments in higher-income economies tightened their spending, the report said.

The GII report studied 128 country profiles, which represent 92.8 percent of the global population and 97.9 percent of global gross domestic product (GDP). -0-
