YEREVAN, May 29. /ARKA/. Armenian newspapers’ chief editors released today a joint statement accusing some news websites of posting printed media outlets’ reports without referring to them, Novosti-Armenia News Agency reports.
In recent days, the chide editors came up with a legislative initiative to amend the copyright law.
The thing is that there is a provision in the law which states that information is not considered as intellectual property.
“Such faults in the law leave room for plagiarizing items by websites and posting them as own products without referring to original sources,” said Tagui Tovmasyan, chief editor of Joghovurd newspaper.
In their joint statement, the chief editors of Joghovurd, Hraparak, Azg, Aravot, Golos Armenii and other newspapers pointed out the rules for reprinting newspaper items. These rules are in tune with journalism ethics and don’t violate the property right.
Tovmasyan said any quotation from newspapers must be accompanied with reference to the newspaper or the link to the full item posted on its website.
Armine Ohanyan, chief editor of Hraparak, on her side, said that the information printed in this newspaper is source of earnings, and unfair media outlets, stealing these items, attract readers and gain profits without investing own journalistic work in it.
The chief editors also expressed willingness to seal contracts with all those Internet resources which are ready to post their products, complying with their demands. -0-
