YEREVAN, April 30. /ARKA/. Carrefour Armenia plans to open about a dozen supermarkets in Armenia and is ready to sell Armenia-made produces through its international network, CEO of Carrefour Armenia (Majid Al Futtaim Group) Vache Arsen said today during a meeting with Armenia's Acting Minister of Economy Vahan Kerobyan.

According to the ministry's press service, the meeting was held to discuss a new investment program, which Vache Arsen announced on April 21. According to the four-year development plan drawn up by Carrefour Armenia, the latter will expand its activities in Armenia, opening 10 comfortable supermarkets in Yerevan during the first year.

“There is already a supermarket of the same format in Yerevan at 30/3 Gulbenkian Street. In the next few years, the supermarkets are to be opened beyond the capital city,” the ministry said.

Vache Arsen stressed that the idea to expand the chain of the supermarkets was prompted by a set of measures taken recently by the government to improve the investment climate in the country, and expressed confidence that if this project is successfully implemented, larger investment projects will follow.

He noted that about 80% of the products offered in Carrefour stores come from the region, which plays a large role in supporting local producers, suppliers and farms.

He also said that Carrefour Armenia, encouraging the sale of Armenian products and wishing to support the local producer, organized a wide display of Armenian products in all its halls. All Turkish-made goods previously presented in the halls have been replaced with Armenian and European ones.

Kerobyan and Arsen discussed the possibility of selling Armenian products in the entire Carrefour supermarket chain abroad. Arsen noted that the expansion of the Carrefour representative office in Armenia will give an opportunity to sell Armenian-made products also in the international Carrefour networks.

The Ministry of Economy also noted that in parallel with sustainable development projects, Carrefour Armenia plans to take clear steps to digitalize business, in particular, by creating and developing an online trading platform that will make the shopping process for Armenian users more convenient.

Carrefour SA is a French retailer, operating the eponymous retail network, the second largest in the world after Wal-Mart.

The first hypermarket of the chain opened in Yerevan on March 11, 2015 on an area of about 66 thousand square meters. Today there are two Carrefour stores operating in Armenia, both of which are located in Yerevan. –0--
