French Cognac House Hennessey to celebrate 250 anniversary in 2015

YEREVAN, December 19. / ARKA /. In 2015, the French Hennessy Cognac House will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its founding. The legend of the world cognac production is a unique example of a company that grew from a family business into a global brand. For more than two centuries this company has been shaping and conveying traditions of global cognac production.

The history of the Hennessy House begins in 1765, when an Irishman Richard Hennessey who served in the army of Louis XVI tasted a brandy made in the French town of Cognac.

After completing his military service Hennessey moved to France and founded a small distillery in the city of Cognac. Richard Hennessey gave the world a new type of drink called "cognac". It is thanks to  Hennessey House that the word "cognac" began to be used in the lexicon of Europeans as a  name of a drink, not a city.

Eight generations of the founder of the House of Hennessey have been keeping and developing their family business. In the second half of the XIX century, a representative of the House of Hennessy - Maurice Hennessey - revolutionized the world of cognac, offering an innovative approach in the evaluation of brandies. 

He began to classify his cognacs based on their aging; choosing in one case a star as an evaluation criterion and in another case describing the aging by Latin letters:

V.S. (Very Special, cognac alcohol, with 2.5 years aging at least)

V.S.O.P. (Very Superior Old Pale,  at least 4 years of aging)

X.O. (Extra Old, aging is not less than 6 years).

The National Inter-Professional Bureau of Cognac that certifies cognacs - still applies the price and quality standards, created by Maurice Hennessy.

Over 250 years of activity the Hennessey House has developed and produced numerous brands of cognac. The most famous are  Hennessy VS (Very Special), Hennessy V.S.O.P. (Very Superior Old Pale), Hennessy X.O. (Extra Old), Hennessy Paradis, each with different taste bouquet, unique recipes, carefully selected combination of cognac and aging.-0-
