Street parking will be paid only in the downtown Yerevan
YEREVAN, December 28. /ARKA/. Street parking will be free in 10 out of 12 administrative districts in Yerevan starting next year, and motorists will be fined for breach of traffic rules only on the basis of video recordings, according to changes to the law on local tax for vehicles parking, approved today by the parliament in the first reading.
Currently drivers are charged 100 drams per hour or 500 drams per day for parking their cars in the city center and many other parts of Yerevan, marked by red lines. The annual fee is 12,000 drams for unlimited parking time. Parking fines are set at 5,000 drams.
Sisak Gabrielyan, an MP from the My Step alliance said the "red lines" will remain only in the center of the capital and in part of the Arabkir district.
"The Yerevan administration will no longer be able to fine citizens on the basis of just one photo. As you know, many citizens are rightly complaining that the parking time is calculated incorrectly," Gabrielyan explained.
He said the proposed changes are supported by the Yerevan Municipality. It has already concluded an agreement with the relevant company on the installation of special technical equipment and cameras that will automatically record the breaches which are subject to fines.
“Where there are red lines, drivers, if they did not pay for parking, will be fined only if there is video confirming that the car was parked for more than 15 minutes,” Gabrielyan said. -0-
