Yerevan Municipality announced a timeframe for resolving the capital's sewerage problem
YEREVAN, May 7. /ARKA/. Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan announced that the problem with Yerevan's sewer system is planned to be fully resolved within the next 5-6 years, or sooner if the pace is accelerated.
"We have conducted an inventory of all problematic sections of the sewer system where major repairs or the construction of a new network are required," Avinyan said at a meeting of the Council of Elders.
Mayoral Advisor Kamo Areyan reported that approximately 93 km of new networks need to be built in areas with no sewerage system at all, and another 73 km of network servicing the courtyards of apartment buildings are in urgent need of major repairs.
"This year, we have specific areas: in the two most problematic areas, a complete reconstruction and major repair of the stormwater system is planned," the mayor noted.
The Yerevan City Hall has repeatedly stated that the city's drainage system is outdated and in need of major renovation.
In some districts, the sewer network is nonexistent, while in others, it cannot cope with heavy rainfall. For this reason, flooding of streets, underpasses, transport hubs, and tunnels is reported after heavy rains. Significant investment is needed to modernize the system; this issue is being discussed with the Armenian government.
