YEREVAN, May 3, /ARKA/. Armenia’s national carrier, Armavia, operated Monday the first flight by Sukhoi Superjet 100 to Venice, Italy, landing at Marco Polo airport, at 1:18 pm after approximately 4 flight hours. It was the frist regular flight from the Armenian capital to Venice, opening weekly flights.

Armavia press service said in a statement that Italy’s ambassador to Armenia, Bruno Skapiani, was one of the passengers. Speaking to journalists he said the new flight will be instrumental in bringing the peoples of Armenia and Italy closer to one another, adding also that it was a great satisfaction flying on board of the Sukhoi Superjet 100. According to him, the aircraft is superior for the comfort delivered to its passengers, for the larger cabin, wider seating and more spacious overhead bins.

Aram Yeghoyan, captain of the crew, said the aircraft is easy and comfortable to operate. Armavia president Mikhail Baghdasarov said SSJ-100 fits well into the company’s strategy to develop the network of its routes between the Middle East and Europe by using Armenia’s international airport Zvartnots as a key hub. He said the second aircraft will join Armavia fleet in June 2011.

The SSJ-100 was delivered to Armavia on April 19, 2011 during a ceremony at Zvartnots airport.
