YEREVAN, July 1. /ARKA/. Armenia has approved the "Lake Sevan Basin Wastewater Management" project, which provides for a three-stage modernization of the treatment facilities.

According to the press service of the Armenian government, the project was approved on Wednesday at the eighth meeting of the Public Investment Committee, chaired by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The project cost and funding sources were not specified.

During the meeting, details of the current state of the treatment facilities and proposed technical solutions were presented.

The project is planned to be implemented in three stages. The first involves modernizing existing treatment facilities and introducing biological treatment. The second stage involves the construction of new treatment plants in medium-sized agglomerations, and the third stage will include small autonomous treatment facilities for small and isolated rural communities.

Lake Sevan is the main source of fresh water in Armenia and one of the largest high-mountain lakes in Europe and Asia. It is located at an altitude of approximately 1,900 meters above sea level. The Hrazdan River originates from Lake Sevan, and 28 rivers flow into the lake. According to the state program for restoring Sevan's ecosystem, the lake's water level is planned to be raised to its optimal level of 1,903.5 meters.
