"The concept of at least four new stations is currently being considered, so that the metro line will pass through Ajapnyak and Academic City and connect with Charbakh station, which will allow for circular metro operation," Pashinyan noted at a briefing on Thursday.
The Prime Minister also announced that the possibility of Russia's participation in the construction of Ajapnyak station is being discussed, given Russia's extensive experience in this area.
"We're not just talking about Ajapnyak. Ajapnyak is, in essence, the beginning of a new stage in the development of the Yerevan Metro, and we're not talking about just one station. "If we successfully build and complete this station, there will be a second and a third," Pashinyan said.
The Yerevan Metro named after Karen Demirchyan was founded in 1981. Currently, 10 metro stations operate in the Armenian capital. The total length of the metro lines is 13.4 km.
About the Ajapnyak Station Project
The construction project for the 11th station of the Yerevan Metro, Ajapnyak, has been planned for several years. The design and estimate documentation was developed by the Russian company Metrogiprotrans, which won the relevant tender.
In April 2026, the Yerevan Municipality estimated the program's cost at 107.3 billion drams (approximately $300 million), while in 2022, the project was estimated at approximately $50 million. Construction was initially scheduled to begin in 2024, but was later postponed to late 2025 and later to 2026.
About the Surmalu Station Project
Surmalu is planned to be the 12th station of the Yerevan Metro. It is planned to be built between the existing Sasuntsi David and Zoravar Andranik stations to improve transport accessibility in the surrounding area, including the areas of the Surmalu and Petak shopping centers, as well as Sevan Street.
The Yerevan Municipality stated that the project will be financed from the community budget in the amount of 400 million drams. In March 2026, the mayor's office announced the completion of the tender for the feasibility study for the station and preparations for signing a contract with the winner. A parallel tender was announced for the development of the urban development concept and preliminary design.
