YEREVAN, May 19. /ARKA/. At a briefing on Tuesday, Mesrop Mesropyan, Chairman of the Public Services Regulatory Commission of Armenia, outlined the country's priorities in the nuclear energy sector.

"There is no final decision yet regarding the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Armenia. We are in the discussion phase, and there is time. Our priority and one of the most important tasks now remains extending the lifespan of the existing nuclear power plant for another 10 years," Mesropyan noted.

Responding to a question about the possible closure of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, Mesropyan stated that he considers such a scenario undesirable and does not expect it to materialize. According to him, despite Turkey's long-standing statements about the risks of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, Armenia is guided by its own strategic interests.

Regarding the prospects for the new modular nuclear power plant project, Mesropyan emphasized that Armenia currently ranks approximately eighth among countries considering the implementation of such technologies.

He added that before moving forward with the new project, the reliable and safe operation of the existing plant must be guaranteed.
