IMF ready to assist Armenia in implementation of reforms

The head of IMF Armenia Mission Hossein Samiei has welcomed the resolution of prime minister Karen Karapetyan’s government to reform the country’s economy, saying the IMF is ready to show the necessary support for its implementation.

YEREVAN, April 12. /ARKA/. The head of IMF Armenia Mission Hossein Samiei has welcomed the resolution of prime minister Karen Karapetyan’s government to reform the country’s economy, saying the IMF is ready to show the necessary support for its implementation.
According to the press service of the government, during a meeting today with Armenian prime minister, Samiei singled out one of the positive signals concerning the government's activity which concerns reforms implemented in the tax and customs spheres to reduce shadow sector and improve tax administration.
According to the head of IMF Armenia Mission, in order to more effectively combat the shadow economy, it is necessary to continue efforts for expanding the tax network. Hossein Samiei said also the IMF attaches importance to attraction of foreign direct investment and is glad that the government is making steps in this direction.
He said during a meeting with representatives of the government’s Center for Strategic Initiatives it was nice to see that active steps were being taken to improve the business environment and help attract new investments.
For his part prime minister Karapetyan noted that the second stage of reforms will begin in the tax and customs spheres and the government will be consistent in this matter.
"Our goal is to expand the tax field and introduce fair principles for the State Revenue Committee. We are determined and confident that we will achieve our goals,' Karapetyan was quoted as saying.
"We appreciate the current situation and intend to implement reforms in all areas, since we have a shortage of efficiency. In the near future we will develop a five-year development program for Armenia, in which we intend to set bold goals," he said.
The interlocutors were said to have discussed also the country's macroeconomic indicators and economic development trends, improvement of the business environment and attraction of foreign direct investment, as well as the tax and monetary policy. -0-
