Sowing campaigns have already begun in some provinces of Armenia thanks to a good weather, Sergo Karapetyan, agriculture minister, said Friday at a meeting convened by Hovik Abrahamyan, prime minister.
YEREVAN, March 12. /ARKA/. Sowing campaigns have already begun in some provinces of Armenia thanks to a good weather, Sergo Karapetyan, agriculture minister, said Friday at a meeting convened by Hovik Abrahamyan, prime minister.
Karapetyan said that sowing has already begun in Ararat Valley, Aragatsotn province’s piedmont areas and Kotayk province.
“In connection with the beginning of sowing, 70% of barley seeds have been provided to farms,” he said. “Diesel has been distributed among them as well and distribution of the government-subsidized fertilizers is under way now.”
He also said that farmer loans at a subsidized interest rate are being extended now.
“Negotiations with canneries over crop procurement have launched earlier than usually to prevent troubles similar to the previous year’s problems,” Karapetyan said.
In his words, agriculture sector recorded 11.7% growth in 2015, and areas under crop increased by 19,000 hectares to 79%.
Exports of fruits and vegetables grew to 17,800 tones in 2015 from 7,300 tons in 2014.
Issues related to preparations for irrigation season and implementation of flood-preventing measures were discussed at the meeting as well. The government has allocated AMD 680 million from the budget to Armavir, Ararat, Gegharkunik and Syunik provinces for these purposes and for fortification of Arax River’s banks.
