Switzerland provides 500k francs, group of specialists to help Armenia recover from flood

YEREVAN, June 5. /ARKA/. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) sent a group of civil engineers and technical specialists to the Lori and Tavush provinces of Armenia to help the country recover from the recent flood, the Swiss Foreign Ministry reported on Wednesday.
This aid was requested by Armenia, the Ministry said. The group will evaluate the structural reliability of bridges and other infrastructure in northeastern Armenia; the group departed to Yerevan on Tuesday.
The Swiss authorities also provided Armenia with 500,000 Swiss francs to assist the recovery efforts.
Heavy rains flooded Armenia’s northeastern provinces Lori and Tavush on 25 and 26 May, causing the Debed, Aghstev, and Tashir rivers to overflow their banks. As a result, portions of the railway and the freeway connecting Armenia with Georgia were destroyed. So far, the death toll stands at 4, and 443 individuals have been evacuated from the flooded area. A total of 300 million drams has been allocated for recovery efforts.
