Volume of cargo transportation in Armenia in 2024 decreased by 7.7%, while passenger transportation increased by 17.3%

YEREVAN, February 7. /ARKA/. The total volume of cargo transportation in Armenia for 2024 amounted to 16,831.5 thousand tons, representing a decrease of 7.7% compared to 2023. Meanwhile, the total volume of passenger transportation reached 225,094.0 thousand people, reflecting an increase of 17.3%. This was reported by the National Statistical Committee of Armenia.

Cargo Transportation
In 2024, 79.6% (or 13,389.6 thousand tons) of total cargo transportation was carried out by road transport, showing a decline of 5.3% compared to the previous year. Trunk pipeline transport accounted for 11.6% (or 1,957.2 thousand tons), with a slight increase of 0.2%, while rail transport contributed 8.6% (or 1,442.5 thousand tons), declining by 31.4%. Air transport carried 0.2% (or 42.2 thousand tons), which saw an increase of 24.8%.

The total cargo turnover for the reporting period amounted to 4,748.2 million ton-km, a decrease of 1.3% compared to the same period in the previous year. The breakdown by transport mode was as follows:

  • Main pipeline transport: 3,093.0 million ton-km (65.1% share, decline of 0.6%)
  • Road transport: 1,261.8 million ton-km (26.6% share, growth of 9.8%)
  • Rail transport: 381.2 million ton-km (8% share, decline of 27.9%)
  • Air transport: 12.2 million ton-km (0.3% share, decline of 31.1%)

Passenger Transportation
In 2024, 81.6% (or 183,710.9 thousand people) of total passenger transportation was carried out by road transport, with a growth of 19.5%. Electric transport accounted for 15.7% (or 35,426.4 thousand people), showing a growth of 10.1%. Air transport saw a slight decline of 0.4%, carrying 2.4% (or 5,393.1 thousand people), while rail transport represented 0.3% (or 563.6 thousand people), with an increase of 4.7%.

Passenger turnover from January to December 2024 amounted to 4,068.7 million passenger-km, decreasing by 23.4% compared to the same period in 2023. The breakdown of passenger turnover by transport mode was:

  • Road transport: 2,097.3 million pass-km (51.5% share, growth of 3.4%)
  • Air transport: 1,766.7 million pass-km (43.4% share, decline of 42.8%)
  • Electric transport: 141.3 million pass-km (3.5% share, growth of 10.9%)
  • Rail transport: 63.4 million pass-km (1.6% share, decline of 4.8%)

Road Accidents
In 2024, 4,314 road accidents were reported in Armenia, which is a decrease of 6.5% compared to the previous year.

  • 333 people died in road accidents (a decline of 11.9%)
  • 6,116 people were injured (a decrease of 6.4%)

Postal and Courier Services
In 2024, revenue from postal and courier services in Armenia amounted to 21,075.2 million drams, reflecting a growth of 2.5% compared to 2023.
