Armenia at a deadlock after Georgia’s breakaway regions recognize independence

28.08.2008, 02:33
Armenia is faced with a dilemma whether to recognize the independence of Georgia’s breakaway rebel regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, said Aram Sargsyan, leader of the Democratic Party of Armenia (DPA).
YEREVAN, August 27. /ARKA/. Armenia is faced with a dilemma whether to recognize the independence of Georgia’s breakaway rebel regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, said Aram Sargsyan, leader of the Democratic Party of Armenia (DPA).

He was quoted as saying: “Armenia is now to choose between the ‘black and white’, the country being in a rather difficult situation. Under these circumstances, Armenia’s President Sargsian tries to weigh his words and appeals.”

Serge Sargsian has welcomed the joint initiative of RF President Dmitry Medvedev and his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy, acting EU chairman, to back the Georgian rebels’ independence poll. Armenia’s President announced the country is deeply concerned with the conflict in the South Ossetia, resulting in a humanitarian catastrophe. He called on the states to join efforts to help the breakaway region overcome the crisis.

The DPA leader said Armenia cannot spoil its relations with neighbor Georgia. He called on the presidents of both countries to hold consultations to decide what decision Armenia should make in order not to become a victim of the current political situation.

Sargsyan believes Armenia can become a mediator of the regional conflict. He stressed the importance of Armenia’s commitments to CSTO. According to the DPA leader, aggression against any state in the region is directed towards all the member-states of CSTO.

“If Azerbaijan attacks Armenia, CSTO members will help us. This is the reason why we should try to find a golden medium,” the politician added.

President Dmitry Medvedev announced Monday he backed the independence poll of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. –0--
