NKR PRESIDENT BELIEVES UNILATERAL COMPROMISES IN KARABAKH SETTLEMENT UNACCEPTABLE

07.06.2007, 23:40
NKR President Arkady Ghukasyan believes unilateral compromises in the settlement to the Karabakh conflict are unacceptable.
YEREVAN. June 7. /ARKA/. NKR President Arkady Ghukasyan believes unilateral compromises in the settlement to the Karabakh conflict are unacceptable, he reported that at the press-conference with OSCE Minsk co-chairs in Yerevan Thursday.
According to him, it is obvious to everyone today that the way of mutual compromises is needed, and their level should be determined during negotiations.
"If Azerbaijan does not express readiness to make a compromise, unilateral compromises from our side are not acceptable," he said.
Ghukasyan pointed out that the Armenian side cannot avoid discussion of issues of Azerbaijan's interest. However, "in this case Azerbaijan must agree to discuss issues of our interest".
Touching upon the issue of liberated territories and the problem of refugees, Ghukasyan said that they are not the reason, but the consequence of the conflict.
"That is why, discussion of the conflict consequences is pointless until the key problem of the NKR status and security is resolved," he said.
Speaking about the mediators' position, Ghukasyan pointed out that their mandate is restricted to a specific degree.
"Co-chairs cannot independently determine the format of the Karabakh conflict resolution. However, if it wants it can elaborate a mechanism to settle this conflict," he reported. R.O. -0—
