YEREVAN, March 1. /ARKA/. The sole presidential candidate Armen Sargsyan, who has been nominated by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia and Armenian Revolutionary Federation/Dashnaktsutiun, told Thursday the parliament that he has no intention to become a member of any party.

“If I am elected as president, I will be not allowed by the Constitution to join any party, and if no, then moreover,” he said.

The constitutional reforms implemented in Armenia' in 2015 have laid groundwork for the country’s transition from presidential to parliamentary rule.

Serzh Sargsyan, Armenia’s present president, will stay in office until expiration of his term and will take up the prime-ministerial seat.

The new president will take up office on April 9, 2018, and the government will be dismissed on the same day.
