Armenia’s presidential candidate Aram Harutyunyan quits election race

Aram Harutyunyan, a candidate for Armenia’s president and a leader of National Consent party, told reporters Wednesday he had decided to withdraw from the election race on February 8, Novosti-Armenia reports.
YEREVAN, February 6. /ARKA/. Aram Harutyunyan, a candidate for Armenia’s president and a leader of National Consent party, told reporters Wednesday he had decided to withdraw from the election race on February 8, Novosti-Armenia reports.
“At 17:00 on February 7, I will go on a one-day hunger strike at the bench in front of the Central Electoral Commission building, and in 24 hours, on February 8 at 17:00, I will go to the Central Electoral Commission to remove my candidacy from the list,” he said.
Harutyunyan said the goal of a one-day hunger strike is to recommend to the other candidates to do the same.
He also clarified he would continue working in political field of the country after quitting the election race.
“I believe many presidential candidates will be gradually leaving the political field of the republic from February 19 after the elections, however I will stay and continue my political career,” he said.
Presidential elections of Armenia are scheduled for February 18.
Besides Aram Harutyunyan, the following candidates will be leading the race: current president Serzh Sargsyan, former prime minister and leader of Freedom party Hrant Bagratyan, former foreign minister and head of Heritage party Raffi Hovannisian, famous Soviet dissident and leader of National Self-Determination party Paruyr Hayrikyan, former foreign minister of Nagorno-Karabakh Arman Melikyan, political scientist and head of Radio Hay Andrias Ghukasyan, philologist Vardan Sedrakyan. -0-
