Armenia sets a date: presidential nominations to start December 25

Presidential nominations will start in Armenia on December 25 and will continue till January 4, chairman of the country’s Central Electoral Commission Tigran Mukuchyan reported.

Armenia’s presidential elections are scheduled for February 18, 2012.
Nominees will be registered between January 4 and January 14. The election campaign is to start from January 21 and to continue till February 16, 24:00. Nominees are allowed to reject their nominations till January 8 (18:00).
According to the schedule, voting protocols will be made public on February 25.
Paid TV campaign per minute cost for presidential nominees will be established by December 18.
Mukuchyan also reported that Armenian diplomats and their families abroad will have an opportunity to vote online.
The Election Day was announced by the head of Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission last Saturday.
According to article 51 of the Armenian constitution, presidential elections are to be held 50 days before the end of the current president’s term, he said.
At the same time, under article 96 of the Electoral Code the chairman of the Central Electoral Commission has to announce the Election Day not later than 70 days before the vote.
The forthcoming elections are the sixth one held in independent Armenia. The first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan was elected in 1991 and re-elected in 1996, but had to leave the post in 1998 due to disputes with other leaders of the country on the Karabakh peace process.
The second president Robert Kocharyan ruled over Armenia in 1998-2008. The current president Serzh Sargsyan was elected on February 19, 2008.
According to Armenia’s constitution, anyone aged 35 and more who has had Armenian citizenship for the last ten years, who has lived permanently in Armenia for the last ten years and who has the right to vote, can be elected as president. Yet, no president is allowed to run for a third consecutive term. –0--
