CSTO creates threats to Armenia's security, statehood and sovereignty - PM
YEREVAN, September 18 /ATRKA/. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced today that the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) creates threats to Armenia’s security, existence and sovereignty.
"We have frozen our participation in CSTO not only because it does not fulfill its defense obligations to Armenia, but also because the CSTO creates threats to the security, existence, sovereignty and statehood of Armenia," stated Nikol Pashinyan speaking at the Second World Armenian Summit.
According to him, many discussions are underway on the issue of restoring Armenia’s relations with the CSTO.
"I have stated before that we would restore our participation only when specific answers are given to the questions we raised. Exactly two years have passed since then, and not only have the answers been given, but it is also obvious that they will not be given at all. And the longer they drag on and the more unconvincing the answers are, the more likely it is that with every second we are approaching the point of no return and no one will have a legitimate right to blame us for this," said he.
In February 2024, Armenia announced the freezing of its membership in the CSTO, and later also refused to pay membership fees to the organization.
On June 12, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the next logical step in relations with the CSTO would be leaving the organization, but soon afterwards Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan made a statement that the Prime Minister meant that the Armenian authorities themselves would decide when to leave the organization. -0-
