Draft text of new Armenian Constitution should be finalized before 2026 elections - Justice Minister

YEREVAN, February 20. /ARKA/. The draft text of Armenia's new Constitution should be ready before the 2026 parliamentary elections, said the Armenian Minister of Justice, Srbuhi Galyan.
"I have repeatedly emphasized that everything must be done to ensure that the draft Constitution text is ready before the 2026 elections, after which a decision will certainly be made to hold a referendum," Galyan said at a press briefing on Thursday.
According to her, over the past years, attempts have been made to develop concepts for a new draft Constitution, and these have essentially been developed.
"Currently, our task is not to develop new concepts, but to create a new text of the Constitution. Work is underway in this direction," Galyan said.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated in his video address to the nation yesterday that adopting the new Constitution through a nationwide referendum is of great importance, as all previous referendums held to adopt the current Constitution have been seriously lacking legitimacy in the eyes of the public.
According to the Prime Minister, the strategic goal of adopting the new Constitution is to transition from a “relict” stateless nation to a functioning, state-oriented people.-0-
