EU and European Commission presidents welcome initialing of peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan

The European Union welcomes the outcome of the meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which was organized by U.S. President Donald Trump, said  the heads of the European Council and the European Commission, Interfax reported.

YEREVAN, August 9. /ARKA/. The European Union welcomes the outcome of the meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which was organized by U.S. President Donald Trump, said the heads of the European Council and the European Commission, Interfax reported.

"The EU also welcomes the initialing of the peace agreement and the establishment of interstate relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan," reads a joint statement by European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The statement was published in Brussels on Saturday night.

The heads of EU institutions stated that "the signing of the political declaration by Prime Minister Pashinyan and President Aliyev in the presence of President Trump at the White House is an important event for both Armenia and Azerbaijan. It opens the way to lasting and sustainable peace in both countries and the region and is the culmination of years of EU efforts." They added that "it is now important to ensure the timely implementation of the agreed steps to guarantee sustainable and continuous progress towards the full normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan." Costa and von der Leyen said,

"The EU strongly supports the normalization process between Armenia and Azerbaijan and stands ready to invest in regional connectivity and openness to benefit populations divided by the legacy of conflicts first and foremost, and to bring the region closer to sustainable peace, stability, and prosperity."-0-
